Entropy is probably one of the most important laws of nature. Some may argue, it is what led to our creation. In thermodynamics, entropy is the opposite of energy. Energy is the capacity of doing work. Entropy is the capacity of not doing work. Energy never gets transferred entirely, the measure of vanished energy is entropy. The energy gone can no longer be used for doing work because work is only done in ordered, structured forms. Gradually, if there is no effort, we move to a state where entropy is the default.

The simple fundamental here is that the universe without any effort is in a state of chaos. Murphy's law said that "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". This simply means everything that exists will remain in chaos unless effort is exercised to bring it in order.

We came into existence because the Sun's light focused itself on Earth leading to a form of structure or order. That structure led to a permutation of elements present on the planet to form life. Entropy has continued to remain constant in most forms of thought and existence. Art is another great example. We love and appreciate art because it is a curation and structure of elements to create a new entity that would have never existed in the universe by default. Most states of existence in the universe are chaotic, but when we're able to build an ordered state (by effort or by luck) it is truly a sacred thing.

When we look around, there's an infinite number of things that tend towards chaos. Innovation is bringing these things into a structural form to maximize efficiency and pleasure. I believe there are two approaches to minimizing entropy.

  1. Passive Entropy - Passive entropy is when, let's say a ship has to sustain a storm, you use better materials to construct the ship. You've put in the effort once and now the ship can sustain any similar storms. The only problem here is entropy applies to 'states'. You've brought in order by structuring the ship better but as things change, it'll again start moving towards entropy. When you wipe the dust off your table, it is in order in that state, but overtime the dust will form again unless you can freeze time.

  2. Active Entropy - The more dynamic approach to entropy is active. When a plane is flying, the pilots (or computers) actively steer and monitor the plane to maintain efficiency. Active entropy applies to the dynamic lives. It changes with every state. It is the most efficient.

When you apply entropy to business, the sole purpose of your business's existence is to build a organizational structure where a group of people can work effectively and use existing resources for building better products. Your job is to steer from chaos to order and constantly work towards maintaining that state.

In education, entropy is when you have chaotic learning. Ordered learning is where you're learning from fundamentals, forming mental models, writing and using analogies to understand better. Skimming through information is chaos (In some cases)

In economics, markets that are not open, innovative and evolving, stagnate to chaos. This applies to multiple other dynamics. Observing and applying this as a mental model to your life can give you strong base for impacting the world.
